Do you think it's a bit sexist to put "female preferred" or "female only" in a classifieds ad?

If I was to put "male only" or "white only" or the worst "white male only" in a classifieds ad in the paper that I would be sued for sexism or racism?

Why is it normal to see aprtmets/houses to rent with the label "female only please" in them? Is this discrimination on basis if sex or is this not a legal issue at all?

thanks!Do you think it's a bit sexist to put "female preferred" or "female only" in a classifieds ad?

Renting a room in a apartment or house..is viewed differently legally then renting out an entire place or selling as the people who are sharing living space.

Now if an apartment complex or Realtor/property manager would to do such all heck would break loose.

I had some 4 bedroom apartments, that where rented out by the room to college kids. I had to advertise them to everyone legally.
1. There are specific instances in which gender is a BFOQ 鈥?bona fide occupational qualification. For example, you wouldn't hire a man to be a midwife, and you wouldn't hire a woman to be a male exotic dancer.

2. Someone who will be sharing a space with a complete stranger has the right to make requests like this. It's a private decision; it's not the same as a landlord denying tenant applications on the basis of sex, race, or whatever, since that landlord won't be directly living with them.Do you think it's a bit sexist to put "female preferred" or "female only" in a classifieds ad?
Actually, if you swapped the word "only" with "preferred", this is perfectly acceptable. It's considered prejudicial and perhaps borderline racist by many, but classified ads would deem it as OK.

E.g., if you wrote, "Man seeking tall, buxom lady in her 30s, preferably white with GSOH" there would be no issue with this.Do you think it's a bit sexist to put "female preferred" or "female only" in a classifieds ad?
I think that is illegal to discriminate based on sex, marital status, creed, or race-- at least that's what it said on the ad on the subway last week.

On a side note, be careful of any room for rent that contains the phrase, "open-minded," it's code for something else, LoL.
Here is a list of the laws that prevent gender discrimination in certain circumstances:

Quote:

鈥air Housing Act (FindLaw)

Prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.

If it's an apartment complex, I would say it is discrimination and illegal. However, if someone is looking to share an apartment, or renting out a room in a house, that's a different situation, because the people are sharing living quarters.
No. I'm a girl and if I want to rent out a room, I don't want to rent it out to a guy. I don't think putting male only would be sexist either. But wanting a female roomate doesn't mean that you hate men and are sexist against them. Saying you only want white people is racist.
Its discrimination, and illegal, but no one cares, and no one will prosecute it. Your case would have little chance of winning.

But of course, you could wave your WASP penis wand and get everything you ever wanted, right?
Irradicate all sexism and you're going to start irradicating rational thought itself. Not all sexism is bad. It never has been all bad and it never will.

I.e. The average man is stronger than the average woman. Deal with it.
All those things are stupid.

We should have total "freedom of association", to be with whoever we want, doing whatever we want, without fear of being called sexist, racist, etc
Everyone has a difference in people that would want to live with. This doesn't make them racist or sexist. It would take more than just looking at their classified add before you passed such judgment on someone.
yes it's discrimination, and like one answer said it's illegal.
