Is it easy to find baby guinea pigs (in stores, adoption, or classifieds)?

I want to get my girlfriend a guinea pig for Christmas. I live in Kansas, and I don't know how easy it is to find a baby one that is still small, but not so hard to take care of (keep alive and healthy). Is it easy to find baby guinea pigs (in stores, adoption, or classifieds)?
Guinea pigs are unusual because the babies are born with open eyes, all their fur and are soon able to run. Then they grow up real fast. So, they may be available but not so easy to find. Have you placed any ads or done any searching? Have you thought about getting a pregnant one?

Just get her a really pretty one and she will be happy. Years ago, my husband bought me a beautiful calico with long hair, I was so happy with it!

You can always find young guinea pigs (perfect age) on Craigslist.org. Try searching for your local area!

Also, try calling an animal shelter in your city to see if they ever get Guinea Pigs. Frequently, they do have small animals but people usually just go to the shelter to get a dog or cat.

I don't recomend buying from a pet store, especially a chain like Petco or Petsmart, especially when there are so many guinea pigs in shelters and on the classifieds that already need homes. Pet stores notoriously treat their animals poorly, using them for profits alone, almost always.

Before you get a guinea pig, read this great fact sheet:

Guinea pigs live 4-7 years, make noises at night, and can have health problems that can be pricey. Please consider this before you adopt a piggy! :)

Best of luck!
